The last few chapters were written in 2002, and reflect major events in my own country. The decision to add a well-known Dr. Who villan to the story allowed me to explore a lot of things that seemed to me to be inconsistent in the original series. It also made some of the scenes I'd already written more meaningful.
The story is set sometime between "Destiny of the Daleks" and "City of Death" and features several of my favorite Dr. Who characters and events. One of them was Cardinal Borusa as portrayed in "The Invasion of Time." I suppose I was a little upset to see him portrayed as evil in "The Five Doctors," but I decided to explore the seeds of his change in this story.
The story of Darmellon and Smarlon was entirely new when I began rewriting this novelette around 1999 or 2000
I realize that this story does not have the usual "the Doctor sets everything right" element of the original series. Ten years ago I had intended it to, but now I feel I had something more important to say.
