Sally Is There to Smile

I wrote this song shortly after I graduated from college and while I was still dating a girl I met there. She broke it off long before I got around to completing the music. It was a sort of music first, words next, rest of the music much later approach. I did much of the work on an accordion, the only keyboard instrument I had at home in those days. Since I had sung in the college glee club, I wrote this for four-part mens' voices.

  Cherished in summer, warm thoughts surround;
    Sally is there to smile.
  Her manners like soft breezes abound;
    Sally is there to smile.

  Fall leaves their claim to beauty must share;
    Sally is there to smile.
  Dying, they fade and fall through the air;
    Sally is there to smile.

  Sadness, like snow, melts when she is near;
    Sally is there to smile.
  Ice, wind and frost leave nothing to fear;
    Sally is there to smile.

  New life arising, bright days return;
    Sally is there to smile.
  From her of spring I willingly learn;
    Sally is there to smile.
